Do you Like Ideas?

Are you human? Really? Sure? OK. But how good are you at creating new ideas?

In this post:

I keep an eye on my client’s digital marketing goodness. Each client has a custom dashboard created to measure success. Some want leads, some want sales and the odd one is looking for world domination. All is recorded in the dashboard along with other stats to do with the health of the website.

Magical Dashboards

What is this magical dashboard? Well, it’s a spreadsheet. Why not use some fabulous tool that gathers stats in one place for your convenience? Two things…

First, they will be overloaded with items that you don’t need.

Second, they make you think in a particular way and not think for yourself.

O’, and third you’ll take your eyes off the reality of what digital marketing is about. By this I mean you’ll miss seeing insights that you gain from graft and getting your hands dirty.

Getting Dirty

Insights come from browsing and consuming the Google Search page, delving into other websites and socials, chatting with the like-minded (and the unalike minded), reading stuff, mulling of stuff you’ve seen but can’t take an action from.

Ideas Rule

John Cleese used to reply when asked where he got his ideas from, “A little shop in Swindon.” He did change that reply to “From ideas.com.”

So, dear reader, that’s you, where do you get your ideas from and do they make a difference to whatever you do? Do they? Really? So, you’re a thinker, not a slave to the [algo]rithm (that’s the way things are going, lives dictated by some geek making money off the backs of us grafters)?

If you are getting your hands dirty and immersing yourself in the digital world you will have absorbed much but you might not be getting to the nub, the bit/idea/insight that will make a difference to your world.

The 100 Quota

“Go away and come back with some ideas.” Heard that before? And, dear person, how many ideas do you return with? Two, three… seven?

I write comedy in my non client time. A VERY funny podcast ‘Jelly Trumpet Season 03 Episode 03 just pub… STOP IT JIM! Give the reader some ‘meat’ for reading this far.

Take your insight/problem/idea and set a quota of 100 hundred ideas. That’s right. When I need extra ideas for a play, sitcom or podcast episode I will generate 100 ideas.

The first few will be inspiration then we get the first hurdle. I get over this by writing a list of things around the idea or character. This propels you into the 20 – 30 ideas. Next comes looking at random things (look up Edward de Bonos ‘PO’ beyond yes and no). More lists are generated and so it goes on. You have to be stubborn buy I belive you can do it.

You scan your 100 ideas and you will find 3 – 5 that have power. That idea with power might have arrived in the first 10. It might have arrived in the last 10. You’ll have an original idea AND you’ll know you have covered all the angles… for now.

Off you go, give it a go and PO!
