Ways to Avoid Digital Marketing Sameness

Posted on Jan 15, 2020 |

Being creative is about seeing the pattern and breaking that pattern, then realising that that is in itself a pattern. If you have a pattern then you’re likely to be suffering from digital marketing sameness.

Then understanding you’ve been thinking too much and you have to sit down for some tea and cake.

I’m a creative junkie.

Love it. Love making something new. Love creating. Love joining dots that have never been joined before.

Digital Marketing Mechanics and Technique

It’s all the same. You’re the same as everyone else aren’t you? No? OK. So, you’re creative with your marketing?

Everyone is creative.

No.

Everyone is a storyteller.

No.

Everyone can do online marketing.

Yes.

Online marketing isn’t difficult. Because it is technique, the knowledge of how the mechanics work. You don’t have to know all the intricacies of SEO you just need to know the value.

You don’t have to know every detail of Facebook or Google Ads to generate sales and revenue.

And that makes you the same as everyone else.

Once you understand the mechanics, once you understand segmentation, categorisation and traffic channels you will have some success.

That’s it, some success, like everyone else doing online marketing.

Making a Difference in Online Marketing

What separates you from the herd, the ‘mastermind group’, the ‘Elite Singles’ is originality.

Do you get it?

There are no magic bullets. Changing the colour of that button is not going to lead to a 1,000% increase in conversion (copy around the button might), there are no ‘nuclear fantastic’ Facebook Ads, just good ones and ones you can make better.

Customer’s Craving

Visitors, customers, clients are only interested in ‘What’s in it for me?’ They crave something, content, that is exciting, useful, fun, silly, offbeat, that is original, creative and not a rehash of what others are doing.

Creative Hats

Edward do Bono, the thinker about thinking is worth checking out, books like ‘Six Thinking Hats’ can set you off on the road of original thinking.

The White Hat calls for information known or needed. “The facts, just the facts.”

Yellow hat

The Yellow Hat is about brightness and optimism. Under this hat you explore the positives and probe for value and benefit.

Black hat

The Black Hat is about judgment – the devil’s advocate or why something may not work. Spot the difficulties and dangers; where things might go wrong. Probably the most powerful and useful of the Hats but a problem if overused.

Red hat

The Red Hat signifies feelings, hunches and intuition. When using this hat you can express emotions and feelings and share fears, likes, dislikes, loves, and hates.

Green hat

The Green Hat focuses on creativity; the possibilities, alternatives, and new ideas. It’s an opportunity to express new concepts and new perceptions.

Blue hat

The Blue Hat is used to manage the thinking process. It’s the control mechanism that ensures the Six Thinking Hats® guidelines are observed.

Your Own Medicine

Collect your own tools. The thinking hats might not work for you so collect a tool chest of ways of thinking that do.

If you have technique then they will come

I’ve bastardised a quote from “Field of Dreams’ here to make a point. Learn the techniques of online marketing. Use that technique to promote your original slant on the things you are selling.
