Take Care When Using AI to Write Website Content

Posted on Sep 3, 2026 |

Google does not say all AI content equals spam.

You’ll only get flagged and penalised if you are mass producing web pages to manipulate search page results. [source: Search Engine Journal].

A recent report from Search Engine Journal suggests Google’s August 2026 spam update may have been particularly effective at targeting mass-produced AI content created primarily for SEO. That’s a good thing, we all want decent, honest and original information to make our business decisions.

An SEO Chap Once Told Me

Google wants the information, the frequency of that information and the nature of that information to appear natural. So, if someone tells you that AI could get you in trouble with Google, remember this line (Search Engine Journal) ‘It’s not AI. It’s mass-generated AI’

What Should I not do, Jim?

Don’t publish 50 AI-written blog posts because you think more pages = more Google traffic. What we do and say in digital marketing should always be ‘bl**dn obvious’.

AI Works and Saves Time When:

  • Used AI for research and brainstorming.
  • Used to create an initial structure or draft.
  • Now the more ‘bl**dn obvious’ stuff:
  • Use your own experience and opinions to colour the copy
  • Use your innate cynicism to check every fact {never trust AI with this)
  • Use your writing skills to annihilate every whiff of AI banality
  • Use information that your competitors don’t have
  • Use this to appreciate each page, does it answer ‘What’s in it for me?’ For your leads/customers

Add Value to Your Website

If an AI tool can produce 100 articles about your industry in an afternoon. They won’t add anything worthwhile, well, they are ripping off what has been written before

Google’s current guidance warns against using generative AI to create many pages without adding value.

AI can help a small business owner turn their knowledge into useful content by:

  • Organising thought
  • Saving hours of research and drafting
  • Ask yourself

“How can AI help me create copy genuinely useful that my potential customers and existing customers will want to read?”

Add Images and Video

Not everyone wants to read and learn, some will want a video, some may take information in via imagery. Do you have budget for video? Do you have budget for a decent video play, like Wistia (helps your videos to appear in search, which is a longshot, for some reason YouTube (shorts) tend to turn up on the Google search page more often).

Images? Well, do you have any original pictures? How about using Canva to create a range of images (a story) that visitors can click through (promoting engagement, time on page and therefore a tick from Google, which means outpacing competitors). Canva can also produce a PDF of an image collection, which becomes a carousel on LinkedIn.

It’s not just the copy that counts.
