Don’t do it.
Don’t create a podcast without a lot of thought and knowing the basics of production and publishing.
In this Post:
- The Idea
- Podcast Checklist
- Your Creative Evolution
There are two types of podcasts. The first is the ‘talky talky’ type where people… erm, talk. The second is the scripted podcast.
The Idea, The Value, perhaps a Niche
If you are looking to create a talking heads podcast what is the pitch? Is this an idea that can be maintained? Is it interesting for many or a few?
A classic way to form a pitch is the simple use of the word ‘meets’ and referencing something everyone is familiar with eg ‘Monty Python meets Doctor Who’ sums up Jelly Trumpet, the scripted podcast I’ve developed.
What’s your business? What extra element are you bringing?
Don’t waste people’s time. If you have the idea then the following is going to help get the beast published.

Podcast Checklist
- The Idea
- The People
- Editing a Podcast
- Publishing
- Promoting
- The Idea
Pitch your idea to those who could be listeners. They are going to be polite but pursue this to gain an insight, perhaps that person will combine your idea with another to make something winning.
The People
Who are you going to talk to? Do you have the time to get them in the right place for recording. Are they interesting, do they have insights. Be honest!
Editing a Podcast
This is one hurdle you have to overcome to make production smooth. Do you have the skills? Do you have the budget to hire a specialist? Do you need to edit? You can make it a short podcast and leave in the “ums” and “errs”.
Publishing
There are many platforms out there. I use Buzzsprout because a) they were quick and helpful with a pre purchase enquiry b) the interface is delightfully easy c) reasonable price $12 pm for 3 hours d) once on Buzzsprout the platform feeds it to Amazon, Apple, Spotify, YouTube and a host of apps.

Promoting
Use social of course and be prepared to spend a little on ads. Instagram is quite cheap for gaining followers. TikTok is way to expensive for ads. X has some niches and quite cheap (well used to be, not used it for a while). Post organically, have a website for further info’ (when needed).
Look out for specialist podcast media. Most people will search in a podcast app but rarely via Google.
Your Creative Evolution
Jelly Trumpet started as a promotion tool for my digital marketing business, Conversion Detectives. The idea was to help make business and marketing people more creative with tips, ideas and challenges (the value). All done with a comedy vibe. Conversion Detectives ‘sponsor’ the podcast. Now? Jelly Trumpet is shedding the creative tips and evolving into a pure comedy show.
Recap
A great idea, editing ability, interesting people and Buzzsprout will set you on the path to podcast glory.
