How Useful is Stubbornness in Digital Marketing?

Posted on Mar 10, 2026 |

“You’re very stubborn!” Said with a Scottish accent, more growl than lilt.

That was my Mum, exasperated by my latest action or was it an inaction?

I always thought it was a compliment by her tone.

I’ve lived with that line in my head. Every so often I can hear her voice growling that line. She’s used a pet name for me but I’m not going to share that. Many times when faced with challenges, stupidity, even opportunities I’ve gone my own way. We do, don’t we?

Stubbornness and Ambition

Here I am, I would say a respected digital marketing consultant AND a comedy writer/performer. The naysayers say ‘most businesses fail inside 12 months’, ‘comedy, that’s impossible to break into.’

Yet here I am carrying a sentence from my old Mum as a light that shines on the cliches we are surrounded by in our chaotic world. I grow more stubborn but I balance that with empathy and an endless ability to listen, to consider the other side of the argument. Then I can say to myself ‘you know what I’m going to do this because I want to not because you say it is impossible.

We’re all like that, those who are comfortable in ourselves and self-motivate to start a business.

Stupidity, Technology and Gurus

We can inform those who are ignorant but we can’t make stupid think. It’s a truth and it is harsh but there are stupid people. Most, I’ve found have an idee fixe (they follow that idea because they fail to consider options) and won’t listen. The deeply stupid think they are great, that they know it all. With stubbornness you can smile and move on.

Technology

Perhaps, the most important aspect of winning with stubbornness.

Lately, this spiel usually starts with ‘With our latest stack of AI will…” No it won’t. Granted it has a use but DO YOUR RESEARCH:

‘ LeCun has been saying, clearly and repeatedly, what the industry doesn’t want to hear: Large Language Models are a dead end on the path to human-level intelligence.

They are, at their core, text-prediction engines, extraordinarily good at retrieving, recombining, and generating language, but fundamentally incapable of understanding the world they talk about. They lack common sense, causal reasoning, and any model of physical reality.’

Yann LeCun
LeCun is the recipient of the 2018 ACM Turing Award.

Also, handy when dealing with Google Account Manager or sales people wanting you to increase budget. Just so ‘No!’

It’s also alright to say ‘I don’t understand’ multiple times. The onus is on them to communicate not on you to understand. If they can’t explain it then they don’t know it or… it’s a mistruth.

Gurus

We’re surrounded by these self-serving-sages spewing out stuff they read on the Internet in another form and selling you a course to make $19,000 dollars in 19 hours.

The best example and an obvious signal I once saw on X was a handle @marketing_genius_3.

They walk amongst us… walk away.

Stay stubborn,
