Balancing your Digital and Non-Digital Channels

Posted on May 5, 2026 |

If you understand the potential scale of each traffic source, you make better decisions about where to invest — and how to balance your mix.

I hope this gives you an idea of how best to use a limited budget. Every business is different and every business will experiment to find the most cost-effective balance.

Digital Marketing Channels

1. Direct Traffic

Is a mix of brand recall (and word-of-mouth), bookmarks, and “dark traffic” (untracked links) which can be bots or people using Virtual Private Networks (VPN).

  • Strong brands can see 20–50%+ of traffic from direct (beware the bot traffic).
  • indicator of brand strength, not something you “switch on” (check Search Console)

2. Organic Search

Still one of the largest scalable channels.

  • 25 – 50% of all website traffic comes from organic search (varies by maturity and SEO).
  • High intent + compounding returns over time.
  • You should also note, if you are using email, subscribers will perform a search and not use a link

3. Paid Advertising (Google)

Fast, controllable, but cost-sensitive.

  • Google processes over 8.5 billion searches per day.
  • Paid search captures high-intent demand immediately.
  • Typical CTRs vary widely (2–10%+ depending on sector).

You’ll also have to take a view on advertising on your brand terms. Remember this Google Account Managers are sales people disguised as a support team.

4. Email Marketing

Quietly one of the highest ROI channels.

  • Average ROI reported around £36 – £42 per £1 spent.
  • Owned audience = no algorithm risk.

5. Podcasts

Growing influence, especially for niche audiences.

  • Over 460 million global podcast listeners.
  • High trust and long-form attention.

Requires significant resource in terms of budget, people and time. Difficult to track but you can review brand term searches in Google Search Console, direct and organic traffic.

6. PR (Digital & Traditional)

Credibility amplifier rather than pure traffic driver.

  • Earned media increases trust and improves conversion rates across all channels.
  • Can drive spikes in referral + branded search.

Done well it will result in links (direct traffic with intent) and citations (something LLM and therefore A.I. search engines look for)

7. Influencers

Reach depends on relevance, not just follower count.

  • Micro-influencers often deliver higher engagement rates than large accounts.
  • Particularly effective in lifestyle, wellness, and eCommerce.

8. Collaborations & Partners

One of the most underused growth levers.

  • Access to pre-built audiences with aligned trust.
  • Often lower cost than paid media with stronger conversion potential.

9. Print Advertising

Less dominant, but still relevant in certain demographics.

  • UK news brands reach ~42 million adults monthly (print + digital).

10. Radio

Broad reach, strong frequency.

  • Reaches >49 million UK adults weekly.

11. TV Advertising

Mass awareness at scale.

  • Still reaches >85%+ of the UK population weekly.
  • Expensive, but unmatched for brand building.

Which Channels for You?

Which channels suit your business? Remember it is a blend of channels that result in success.

High-growth businesses don’t rely on one source — they build channel synergy. Your aim should be word-of-mouth which comes from great products/services, great customer care and engaging with your people in a human manner.

If your acquisition strategy is too narrow, your growth will be too.

If you want help assessing which channels will actually move the needle for your business — and how to convert that traffic once it arrives — message me.
