Search Engine Optimisation has a VERY bad press. I’m not surprised. There are a lot of people who will tell you they can get you to the top of Google easily and quickly.
It’s not that easy BUT it is important.
SEO increases the amount and quality of traffic to your website. It is a very broad church and involves many sub disciplines. SEO involves some technical aspects.
Technical SEO
This refers to optimising your site for crawling and indexing, but can also include any technical process meant to improve search visibility.
For example this can be site speed, removing duplicate content and redirecting deleted pages.
It is a huge subject and always changing.
SEO for Traffic
When you see your website listed in Google you’ll see the title of the page, the URL (the link) and a description. There are many variations of this scenario.
SEO at its Simplest
The title is the most important aspect and that’s where your keywords should reside. The link, also important also needs to closely match the keywords. Finally you have the description. Again the keywords should be repeated but the description is more of a Call to Action.
All Change
Google is changing what you see all the time. Different forms of search are trialled. Videos, social networks, knowledge boxes etc.
The Fact is Content
Produce the best quality content you can. We’re just going to look at the written word.
Write for people first and KNOW how Google works. That’s what the paragraph ‘SEO at its Simplest’ is about. You can still make great inroads by writing well for people and knowing the basics of meta data that is the title and description you see in Google search.
One Page Optimisation
Write your webpages for one keyword phrase and put the simple SEO into action. It’s not easy to rank more than one set of keywords per page. I’ve seen it happen but that was for keywords with a similar meaning.
Never Stop SEO
Because Google changes all the time and new competitors appear a drop from position two to three in Google search will effect your traffic.
Identify Top Website Pages
Which are the pages that are bringing in the most traffic that takes an action? Look at the Behaviour Report in your Google Analytics. Get to know these pages and monitor them every week.
Word Tweaking
Can you improve the ranking of those pages? Can you get them higher up Google Search?
You have several things you can try:
- Add new copy to the page. Google likes freshness
- Move the keywords in the Page Title near if not the actual start of the title.
- Can you offer a stronger call to action?
- Can you link within your website to this page from another top trafficked page?
- Can you get a link to this page from another website.
Always be testing and tweaking. You may go down in the Google rankings so change and monitor.
Action
What are the top five pages that produce sales or signups on your website?
